Sharing a branch

A branch is a folder, with everything inside it, or a single note. You give it to someone by their email address, read-only or read-write. It appears in their tree, and their AI reads it too.

The steps

Four, from the dashboard.

Open the folder or the note

From the tree on the left, open what you want to share. If it is a folder, the share covers everything inside it, including the notes you put there tomorrow.

Press Share

Top right, in the header, there is Share (on a phone it sits in the menu). The panel opens with the list of who already has access.

Cobrain warns you if the branch holds a note that looks confidential (by its title: password, credentials, private…). If it should not be shared, move it out of the branch first, then share.

Email and permission

Type the person’s email and choose Can read or Can write. Press Share: they get an email with the link to come in. If they do not have an account yet, they create one with that same address, free.

Writing belongs to the Pro plan; the free plan includes three read-only shares. Whoever receives never pays, in any case.

What they see, and how to take it back

In their tree, under Received, the branch appears with your name next to it. When they ask their AI about the client, the AI finds your notes alongside their own. To take access back, open Share again and remove the person: from that moment they see nothing, and neither does their AI.

Things worth knowing

What people usually ask after their first share.

  • Whoever receives sees the branch and nothing else: not the rest of your brain, not the structure above the branch. The rule is applied by the database, the same for the site and for the AIs.
  • Edits by whoever writes stay on the record: the note says who changed it, and the previous version can be brought back.
  • You can share a folder you just created, or one that exists only because there are notes inside it.
  • If you stop paying, the shares beyond the first stay read-only: nobody loses anything.

Why sharing is the heart of the product is explained on the page in a team.
